“Walking into the Sabathani Center’s basement to watch a run through of MAD FOREST is like stepping into a submarine on full alert. Wendy Knox, the Frank artistic director, commands from the side as members of her large cast deliver hushed lines in Romanian. The play is written by British playwright Caryl Churchill, and it’s vintage Churchill. The characters seem tender and affectionate, yet their witty commentary and absurd hijinx keep the audience laughing amidst the misery of Ceaucescu dominated Romania. MAD FOREST is also vintage Frank Theatre, combining tricky technical effects, mixed media, and stop-on-a-dime light and sound cues with hard-hitting and bitter satire that leaves the audience reeling.”
