Gottlieb Biedermann made his fortune by selling hair follicle replacer. He enjoys wine, his cigars and relishing his success, while scoffing at the gullibility of the citizens of his town who let strangers into their homes and, surprise, find their house burns down! And with the string of arson fires around town, WHO WOULD DO THAT? Then a knock on the door comes. Schmitz, an unusual creature, flatters Biedermann, and soon lands himself a sleeping spot in the attic. The next day, his friend Eisenring joins him as they haul barrels of gasoline up to the attic. Biedermann, unwilling to recognize what is happening, assists them in their plot, even handing them the match for the final gesture. THE ARSONISTS is a wildly funny “moral play without a moral” about our willingness to bury our heads in the sand rather than take on political and social responsibility. At the Ritz, Feb 12-March 6.
